Thank you for reading my first blog post. Since it's the first official post I think it is important to reflect on where we have been together... From this point on, I will share with you thoughts on where we are headed as well as some observations "from the field."
Three years ago, the Mohegan Council embarked on a three year strategic plan with a goal to become the "Best Scouting Program in New England!" It is almost hard to believe three years has gone by as fast as it has. I am truly amazed and inspired by what we have accomplished together during that time.
The pathways for the plan were well defined yet simple. There were three - to strengthen the scouting program, build financial stability and predictability and enhance the Treasure Valley Experience. The 2010 year marked the pinnacle year of the plan. While there were many goals and objectives within every aspect of the plan led to the 2010 centennial year of scouting. I am proud to say the council was recognized, in the 100th anniversary of scouting, as a Centennial Quality Council! While we did not hit every benchmark, progress was made in all areas, and most of the achievements we set forth for ourselves were met.
The highlights include:
- The council now serves over 5,000 registered youth in scouting; an achievement not recognized since 1999.
- An average of 68 scouts attain the rank of Eagle Scout annually.
- Treasure Valley Scout Reservation observed its fifth straight year of camp attendance growth in Cub Scout and Boy Scout attendance and now serves over 1,250 scouts at the camp with increases in both council campers and out of council participation.
- Significant enhancements to the camp have been made with upgrades to the kitchen facilities, food quality, program delivery, staff continuity and other improvements including renovation of several unit sites, program areas, year-round buildings and the infrastructure.
- Gross popcorn sales exceeded $375,000 of which over a quarter of a million dollars stays in the program in support of the youth and their program.
- The council has increased the number of annual donors by over 300% in the past five years - a tribute to the commitment of the community to continue to support scouting.
- In 2010, the council - especially with the support of its units - held a successful yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary which included the biggest event in council history - the New England Scout Show at the DCU Center.
Last but not least and probably most important of all, the retention of scout involvement has increased to a rate of over 78% of the youth enrolled annually. This is reflective of strong service to units, effective council and district level programming, and improved communications.
As we embark on the next 100 years of scouting we have much to be proud of as a council. The future of scouting in Central Massachusetts is bright! As for the question are we the best scouting program in New England? The answer in many ways is yes, but the proof is demonstrated through those we serve - the youth and their families. From my personal perspective we have the best volunteers, the most enthusiastic scouts, the best camp, and the most supportive families of any council in the Northeast! We also have an incredible staff of individuals committed to the mission and driven to achieve the best scouting program possible. Thank you for supporting scouting and most especially thank you for being an integral part of the Mohegan Council! I look forward to hearing from you and working with you as we refine our 2011 - 2013 plans and continue this journey of excellence together.
